Youth advocate pushing for pragmatic solutions through joint European efforts joins Political Festival of Europe

Political Festival of Europe will be held for the first time from 25 to 28 August 2022 Mariager, Northern Denmark. It is the first pan-European festival of its kind with an aim to gather citizens and decision-makers from across the continent to strengthen the democratic conversation. Overarching themes that will shape the many activities of the Festival include business, climate, culture, democracy, foreign policy, health and technology. In addition to the many debates that will take place, the Festival is also a place for festivities and cultural celebrations.

Zoé Elkær Nicot, youth advocate with firm roots in Danish and European civil society is joining Political Festival of Europe as moderator and guest speaker.

Political Festival of Europe is very happy for the proactive energy that Zoé Elkær Nicot brings to the table. With her background in EU law and strong anchor in Danish and European civil society, Zoé will contribute with expertise and experiences relating to the debates she will be active in. Additionally, we hope that having Zoé join the Festival at multiple levels can empower European Youth to engage in European politics and democracy,

says Jan Bertelsen, CEO for Political Festival of Europe. Tweet

Throughout the Festival, Zoé will moderate seven debates on topics all from migration policy to the future of EU-Russia relations. Zoé will also participate as panellist in an additional six debates, on issues ranging from the democratisation of the EU to democratic backsliding and the rule of law.

For the first time ever, the European Court of Justice ruled in 2021 that effective legal protection is at risk in an EU member state – Poland. Judicial independence and the separation of powers – core pillars of any democracy – are undermined in the EU, and this shakes the very foundation of the Union. We must use all available tools to prevent further democratic backsliding and reinstate the rule of law across the EU,

This is one of Zoé’s key messages in her capacity as the Danish EU Youth Delegate, as Youth Delegate at the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, and as Youth Delegate at the EU-ASEAN Young Leaders’ Forum.

Zoé is co-founder of the European Debate Initiative (EDI) and was awarded the 2021 European Citizen’s Prize by the European Parliament for its contributions.

EDI’s purpose is twofold: to raise awareness of European affairs, and to push for pragmatic solutions to pressing European problems, such as migration policy and the rule of law, in collaboration with experts in the field,

Zoé is also active in a number of Youth Councils and Advisory Boards – currently at Plan International Denmark, the think tank “Mandag Morgen”, the U.S. Embassy in Denmark and finally Political festival of Europe itself. She is also an education advocate in her capacity as National Youth Leader in Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and she chairs the Forum for International Cooperation Youth (FIC). Finally, she pushes for more youth inclusion into the board room through the organisation SAGA.

Political Festival of Europe is an annual democracy festival that serves as a platform for democratic dialogue about the most pressing issues on the European agenda. On the side of political events, the Festival is also a place of festivities that celebrates the rich and diverse culture and heritage of Europe.

Pressemeddelelse

3. august 2022

siger Jan Bertelsen, CEO ved Political Festival of Europe. Tweet
