a place of gathering to celebrate Europe's culture and heritage
and strengthen democracy conversation

Press release

Two weeks until the kick off: Europe to meet in Mariager, Northern Denmark

More than 200 politicians, businesses and organisations from over 30 European countries will gather from 25 to 28 August in Mariager for Political Festival of Europe, the first pan-European democracy festival. Normal traffic in the town will be closed down and the streets will be filled with democratic conversations, events and music.

For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, more than 12 European ambassadors and embassy representatives will over the course of four days gather in the same small town in Jutland, Denmark. They will be joined by several European and Danish ministers, including Denmark’s Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod (S).

The many speakers will devote their time to meeting citizens and debating a myriad of important issues within European politics. On the six official debate stages, more than 130 political events will take place, focusing on topics within seven main themes: business, climate, culture, democracy, foreign policy, health, and technology.

Additionally, well over 30 Danish and European politicians from the European Parliament, national parliaments, regional councils and city councils will be attending Political Festival of Europe. They will be joined by the respective Danish and European party organisations, such as the ALDE Party and the S&D Group.

Activity tents and other organising partners

As known from other “Folkemøder”, i.e. democracy festivals, the streets of Mariager will be filled with tents where organisations, parties and businesses will host their own programmes. Some will even use the old Veteran train wagons at the harbour.

During the Festival, the local school in Mariager is spearheading the “Children’s Democracy Festival” which will with a packed programme take place next to the Salt Centre. Meanwhile, the local church will host services and concerts, complemented by “hyggelige” events in the monastery garden.

In addition, the Mariagerfjord Municipality’s libraries, cultural administration and youth school have put together an exciting programme that includes everything from community singing, rhythm choirs and quizzes in the streets, to water activities in Denmark’s most beautiful fjord.

Cultural experiences

In between the events and all the mingling, there’s also a need for food and drinks. Take a breather with a cold beer and visit the local restaurants, food stalls or food trucks to taste both Danish and international cuisine. On Friday and Saturday during the day, you can enjoy music and cultural experiences on the Performance Stage, and in the evenings there are free concerts on the Europe Stage – Sunday morning there is also morning singing and a concert at 12.30.

Over the next two weeks, there will be regular announcements about the events, partners and speakers – keep up with all news at www.pfoe.org – or on social media, #PFOE2022 and in the monthly newsletter.

Pressemeddelelse

To uger til kick-off: Europa mødes i Mariager
